Through its Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG) Activity, EWMI organized a two-day workshop on Human Rights for thirty-two Tbilisi City Court judge assistants. The workshop was conducted by two EWMI experts, Besarion Bokhashvili and Ekaterine Lomtatidze, who delivered sessions on the underlying principles of human rights law, human rights jurisprudence of international human rights institutions and its impact on domestic practice, as well as Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). This was the second in a series of EWMI-PROLoG workshops aimed at enhancing the judicial assistants’ legal skills and their knowledge of international human rights standards. The first workshop, conducted in December by EWMI's international resource partner Washburn University, was on legal writing and argumentation. PROLoG’s program for Tbilisi City Court’s so-called “writing assistants” involves intensive training covering both basic and practical aspects of human rights relevant to practice in Georgian courts, as well as a hands-on mentoring component involving actual cases. The overall program aims to improve the quality of judicial decisions by ensuring that the required human rights standards are applied in court decisions.
