Promoting Responsible Tech
2024 – Present
EWMI is supporting Malaysian groups working in the tech, human rights, and social justice spaces with a participatory, civil society-led granting process to fund opportunities that are surfaced at a co-creation convening. Three key gaps were identified during a recent convening: (1) there is a substantial knowledge gap among CSOs and stakeholders regarding effective advocacy strategies to counter technology abuse; (2) a lack of research analyzing malicious actors, their narratives, and their modus operandi; and (3) a lack of coordination among CSOs in this space leads to overlapping efforts in monitoring the same malicious actors. Outputs under the project include the formulation of an online and offline knowledge hub, research on existing mechanisms financing coordinated campaigns on social media, focusing on content that politicizes race and religion and a development and implementation of a fellowship program aimed to bridge the gap between professionals with legal, tech and human rights backgrounds.
