A cornerstone of our digital rights agenda is our on-going involvement in groundbreaking initiatives like the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI). Developed in partnership with the Global Center for AI Governance, LIRNEasia, the Local Development Research Institute, and ILDA, the Index serves as a critical benchmark of over 140 countries’ readiness for responsible AI governance. The first edition of this independent and globally comparative tool informed AI policy development in countries such as Kenya and Colombia, has been featured in reports by UNESCO, and integrated into other global indices. EWMI and its partners are undertaking the second edition of the Index for release in 2026. The project is supported by the International Development Research Center (IDRC).
