Increasing Access to Justice through Awareness

EWMI is pleased to announce a new guest lecture series for university and college students in the Kyrgyz Republic aimed at improving students’ knowledge of the role and structure of the judicial system. Officially launched on May 17, 2018 by the Collaborative Governance Program (CGP), the lectures are being led by CGP partner, the Public Association "Kyrgyz Association of Women Judges," in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic.

During the lecture series, the judges will address over 1,200 students from over 40 universities and colleges (vocational institutions) in all regions of the Kyrgyz Republic. The judges’ presentation of the judicial system will provide students with details about the new Law on Safeguarding and Protection against Domestic Violence, increase students' awareness of the Free Legal Aid Centers (FLACs) that have been established countrywide to provide free legal assistance and improve the overall legal security of citizens, and demonstrate the Ministry of Justice’s interactive map of legal service providers found at www.legalmap.gov.kg. The interactive map, established earlier this year with support of the CGP project, helps citizens easily access legal information, search for legal services, and gives users access to information about approximately 1,500 legal service providers. Students attending the lectures will also learn about the Kyrgyz Republic’s Supreme Court’s online resource of judicial acts (www.sot.kg), where judicial decisions and other information on the work of courts are published. Additionally, CGP is providing all students with booklets, brochures and video PSA demonstrations aimed at improving access to justice for the most vulnerable groups of the population in Kyrgyzstan.

The guest lectures are part of CGP’s broader work to increase Kyrgyz citizens’ knowledge about the justice system in an effort to increase the demand for the rule of law in the Kyrgyz Republic and increase access to justice for the most vulnerable population. The Collaborative Governance Program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI).
