The Reduce Case Backlogs and Improve Efficiency in the High Court of Albania project is a three-year project funded by the Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. 

EWMI’s Strengthening Media Integrity Standards in Albania Project was an 18 month project, and the fourth in a series of related projects, that sought to contribute to the empowerment of champions of change – media professionals – to become more capable, aware, and resilient.

EWMI implemented the USAID Justice for All project in Albania, a five-year project designed to improve court performance through implementation of comprehensive judicial performance standards in efficiency, transparency, accessibility and accountability.

Under a subcontract from Casals & Associates, EWMI worked to reduce corruption in Albania by providing on-site technical assistance to the High Inspectorate for the Declaration and Audit of Assets (HIDAA).

EWMI provided comprehensive assistance to Albania’s courts and judicial system through a combination of administrative and judicial training, automation, computer network installation, and public outreach under the three-year USAID-funded Albania Pilot Court Administration Reform Project (APCARP)

EWMI assisted Albania in its efforts to create an efficient, impartial, knowledgeable and transparent judiciary through its USAID-funded Albania Judicial Court Administration Training Program (JTP), and its follow-on, the Albanian Legal Systems in Support of Market Reform (LSSMR) Program.

A JUSTICE REFORM WATCHDOG

The Justice for All in Albania project (JfA) continued its important work with the University of Tirana Department of Journalism (UT DoJ) to strengthen the teaching of journalistic skills in Albania and further strengthen the capacities of the country’s future journalists, with a particular focus

The USAID-funded Justice for All project (JfA) has found new ways to inspire and support university-level journalism students as part of the Beyond Fences 2.0 Initiative despite COVID-19-related restrictions and safety measures.

‘TRUE OR FALSE’ AND RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM

Faktoje, a fact-checking media service that promotes accountability based on the right to information and transparency, was launched in Albania in May 2018 with full technical support from the USAID-funded Justice for All project (JfA), implemented by EWMI.

Through the USAID Justice for All Project, EWMI is supporting journalism students in Shkodër and Elbasan to build their capacities in digital storytelling techniques.

With funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the East-West Management Institute, Inc.

EWMI is closely following developments related to the current outbreak of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID – 19) and monitoring guidelines provided by relevant international, national and local public health authorities.

At a time when the ease of clicks and taps often blurs the line between misinformation and verified fact, a team of journalists in Albania has opened a new chapter in the history of the country’s media with their commitment to fact-checking.

A crucial dimension of justice sector reform in Albania was assigning Court Chancellors increased managerial and leadership roles alongside the Court Chair and Deputy Chairpersons.

The 2017 justice sector reform in Albania added new layers to the mandate of the School of Magistrates by including Chancellors and other court administration staff in the school’s continuing professional education programs.

Capable investigative journalists operating within a framework of an independent and open media are key to exposing and eliminating the culture of corruption that continues to persist in Albania.
