Sri Lanka’s Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC) has recently expanded its mandate to encompass corruption prevention, and is now in the process of establishing a new corruption prevention unit. With funding from a grant from the US Department of State, Bureau of Human Rights, Democracy, and Labor (DRL), EWMI recently organized a visit by CIABOC’s leadership to Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency, Komisi Pemerantasan Korupsi (KPK), to learn from KPK’s extensive corruption prevention program. CIABOC’s Director General, Sarath Jayamanne, one of its Commissioners, Neville Guruge, and two of its senior staff spent three days in Jakarta meeting with their Indonesian counterparts to exchange experiences and practices on all aspects of corruption prevention, including asset declaration, gift reporting, research and legislative initiatives, coordination with regional bodies and CSOs, and public education and outreach. The CIABOC leadership also presented their hosts with copies of Sri Lanka’s recently adopted National Anti-Corruption Strategy. Upon return to Sri Lanka, the information gathered in Indonesia will be put to use in the design and staffing of CIABOC’s corruption prevention unit, as well as in the implementation of activities to be implemented with EWMI support, such as community anti-corruption days and youth education.
